What is Venetian plaster
Venetian plaster is a wall and ceiling finish that consists of plaster mixed with marble dust, applied in thin, multiple layers, which are then polished to create a smooth surface with the illusion of depth and texture.
-
Composition: Traditional Venetian plaster is made from lime putty (calcium hydroxide) and finely ground marble dust. Modern versions may include acrylic and synthetic polymers to improve durability and ease of application.
-
Appearance: It is known for its glossy finish that can look both textured and smooth. It can mimic the appearance of marble, stone, or other naturally occurring materials. The technique involves applying several thin layers with a spatula or trowel, which are then burnished to create a shiny, polished look.
-
Colors and Effects: Venetian plaster can be tinted or colored using natural or synthetic colorants. This material is versatile in terms of aesthetic outcome; it can achieve a wide range of colors and effects, from deep, rich tones to soft, subtle hues.
-
Applications: It’s used primarily on interior walls and ceilings for its aesthetic appeal and texture. It’s also appreciated for its ability to “breathe” – allowing moisture to escape from walls, which makes it suitable for both old buildings and new, modern structures.
-
Durability: When properly applied, Venetian plaster is very durable. It can resist both mold and mildew and can last for many years without fading. The lime in the plaster also has a high pH, making it naturally fungicidal and bactericidal.
-
Maintenance: It is relatively easy to maintain. It can be wiped clean with a damp cloth, and minor scratches or marks can be polished out
